London Life Science Week concludes successfully, injecting new momentum into Sino-British cooperation.
From November 16th to 21st, London Life Sciences Week 2025 was held in London, UK. This prestigious event, jointly organized by London Development Agency, London Medical City, and the UK BioIndustry Association, has become the largest and most influential industry trendsetter in Europe's life sciences field.
This year's event brought together over 1,300 senior international industry decision-makers and over 3,300 attendees, including prominent figures such as London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Sir Jon Symonds, Chairman of GSK. The five-day event encompassed over 70 activities, including an opening reception, thematic forums, and symposia, providing a highly efficient platform for collaboration among global biopharmaceutical companies.01 Industry Cluster: London Becomes a European Life Sciences HubLondon Life Sciences Week is not only a showcase platform but also a trendsetter for industry development. According to official data, London currently has over 2,700 life sciences companies, and 19 of the world's top 20 pharmaceutical companies have a presence there.London is promoting deep integration of research and industry through the "London Growth Plan." As Europe's leading life sciences hub, London is home to over 2,400 life sciences companies, more than 180 business incubators and accelerators, and has invested £147 million in a skills investment program to address talent shortages.02 AI: From "Assistive Tool" to "Core of R&D"Artificial intelligence was a focal point at this year's Life Science Week. At the main forum "The Future of Life Sciences," Professor Jason W. Qin of the Medical Research Council explained how generative biology can be combined with AI to achieve greener and more efficient biomanufacturing. Sir Jon Symonds, Chairman of GSK, further pointed out in a panel discussion that the industry's R&D model is undergoing a disruptive shift "from science-driven to data and technology-driven." He believes that AI has immense value, but its predictive capabilities are highly dependent on high-quality, large-scale datasets.03 Building an Innovation Super ClusterWith the deepening development of the life sciences field, the era of working alone is over; building a collaborative ecosystem has become another focus of this year's event. Discussions about building a "London-Cambridge-Oxford" super cluster attracted significant attention. This "Golden Triangle" of life sciences is Europe's largest life science cluster, currently attracting approximately 63% of the UK's deep tech and life sciences investment. In a fireside chat hosted by Dr. Angela Kukula, CEO of London Medical City, experts pointed out that future competition is essentially a battle between ecosystems.04 A New Chapter in Sino-British Cooperation: Shanghai Delegation Debuts in LondonThis grand event witnessed new developments in Sino-British life science cooperation. A biomedical delegation led by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce and the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology was invited to London to participate in Life Science Week and hold the "Shanghai Biomedical Industry Promotion Conference."Zhou Lan, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, pointed out at the conference that in 2024, the bilateral trade volume between Shanghai and the UK approached 97.5 billion RMB, demonstrating a solid foundation for cooperation. She stated that Shanghai's biomedical industry continues to grow in scale and its innovation capabilities have significantly improved, providing ample space for international cooperation.Several Shanghai companies, including Fosun Pharma, United Imaging Healthcare, and Medicilon, showcased their core technological strengths during the roadshow and clearly expressed their willingness to seek technological collaboration and market expansion. It is reported that some companies have reached preliminary cooperation intentions, laying the foundation for in-depth cooperation between China and the UK in the life sciences field. The Genome England Research Summit and other follow-up events will continue the momentum of London Life Sciences Week. As companies in Shanghai and London reach more cooperation agreements in technology research and development and technology transfer, Sino-British life science cooperation is expected to achieve in-depth collaboration in key areas such as pharmaceutical research and development and clinical trials. The global life sciences industry is ushering in new development opportunities driven by both AI and data.
